It’s official, Scotland has the best beach in the UK.

TripAdvisor have been handing out their Travellers Choice Awards this past month to restaurants, hotels, beaches and even attractions.

But there’s one award everyone wants and that’s the ‘Best of the Best’ worldwide. For beaches, there are just 25 places available with Baia do Sancho, Brazil claiming the top spot and Grace Bay Beach in the Tirks and Caicos claiming second. Beaches in Cuba, Islands of Sicily, Grand Cayman, Aruba, Puerto Rico and Florida all take their place among the elite.

Trip Advisor commented “Every year, we pull together all the reviews, ratings, and saves that travellers share from across the globe — and use that info to spotlight the very best. The Travellers' Choice Best of the Best awards celebrates them all.”

For the UK the top spot went to Luskentyre Beach on the Isle of Harris, right here in Scotland and scooped the number 13 spot worldwide beating Playa de Ses Illetes, Balearic Island and even beat the calm turquoise waters of Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres with it’s pure white sand.

Home of the world famous Harris Tweed, the Isle of Harris has Rocky Mountains to the North and white sandy beaches in the South along with the newly opened Isle of Harris Distillery. There’s certainly plenty to see on the island with an abundance of wildlife, St Clements Church which was constructed in 1520, Loch Crabhadal, the Sound of Taransay, the small crofting village of Seilebost, Hushinish is a small settlement of only 4 dwellings, as well as a photographers paradise at Bagh Steinigidh. The island is also home to another two tremendous beaches.

One TripAdvisor Reviewer summed up the beach nicely "We were very fortunate to spend a week staying on Luskentyre. The beaches are out of this world. They are litter free, white sandy beaches, turquoise shallow waters and if you are lucky you can sometimes watch the seals. You can see why Luskentyre features in travel magazines as one of the best beaches in the world... during the week we stayed, we had the beach to ourselves. Watch out for the Luskentyre horses!"

Getting to the Western Isles is easier than ever with various ferry routes via Sail Hebrides. You can fly from Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness to Stornoway (Isle of Lewis) and you can also fly to Benbecula from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Stornoway. Alternatively, begin your visit with an unforgettable bucket list experience and take a flight to the Outer Hebrides landing at Barra Airport – where use the cockle strand airstrip of Traigh Mhor beach, which is consistently voted one of the world’s top air approaches and where flight schedules are at the mercy of the tides.

The TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards also saw Edinburgh claimed the number 23 spot for the "world’s trending destinations" and the top in the UK, whilst Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands Small-Group Day Tour from Edinburgh also picked up a top 25 spot for best attractions worldwide.
